( DLabc) The ABC's of Installing the Downloaded DESL System

Steps in the Installation Process :

1. PC : Relocate the downloaded deslsys.exe self-extracting archive to the location to which the "DESLH" environmental variable points.

   Unix : Relocate the downloaded tar file deslsys.tar, where sys is sun, solaris, or iris, to the location to which the "DESLH" environmental variable points.

2. Run the deslpw.exe program from the DOS/Unix command line to reveal a 4-character code to be supplied on the password form to be faxed/emailed to ViGYAN.

3. PC : Once a valid password has been emailed to you run the deslsys.exe program from the DOS command line via "deslsys.exe -dir". The -dir will force the production of the sub-level directories which will ultimately contain the local documentation. If no local DESL web-page documentation is desired then the "\doc" subdirectory and its contents can be removed.

   Unix : Once a valid password has been emailed to you un-tar deslsys.tar file via "tar -xvf deslsys.tar". If no local DESL web-page documentation is desired then the "/doc" subdirectory and its contents can be removed.

   .	(Begin modifications on 082102) Depending on the non-PC system configuration, the file doclock.x may have to have its permissions changed from the default. This file needs have both read and write permisions turned on for all DESL users. (End modifications on 082102)

4. If local documentation is desired then the makesys utility in the \doc subdirectory must be executed in that directory. Individual web pages will be produced in \doc itself. Whether the makesys utility should have any options also specified depends on :
   • Whether a demonstration version of DESL is being run

   • Whether there are any user notebook files to be inserted into the web pages or not

   If the version of DESL is demonstrationno user notebook information can be applied to the web pages being produced.

   If DESL is to be run as an unrestricted version up to 10 user notebooks can be applied to the web pages being produced.

   If local documentation with one or more sets of notes is to be produced, the command would look like :

   makesys -notes noteset1

   if the file "noteset1" was to be used as a notes file.

Now that DESL has been successfully installed you can begin to use the software.
